I haven't posted about the writing process for a while, so I thought I'd give an update today. As you can see by the title, I feel that I'm starting to see the finish line of writing my book Homeschooling Without Regrets. It's faint, but if I squint my eyes and the light is just right, I can see it on the horizon. You'd think this would be highly motivating. In small moments, I feel that motivation. But at other times, I know the distance to the finish line is still quite long. The problem with any big creative project is that it is easily interrupted by regular life. And some of those interruptions are happy and welcome. For example, our second grandchild was recently born, so I will take a couple of two-week breaks in order to help take care of him. I can't wait! But the manuscript will have to wait.
It helps that I have already written one book and its updated and expanded edition. That felt like two books but ultimately amounts to one revised edition. In case you're interested, it's called Ramblings & Roundabouts: An American Couple's Travels in Europe--Mostly by Motorhome. I learned with that experience that even after the manuscript is finished, there are several more steps required by my publisher. So, it's hard to pin down a date when I will cross that finish line this time.

Keeping that long-distance goal in my closer field of vision helps me stay motivated, as well as working on my manuscript some each week, even if it's a small contribution. Plugging along at a somewhat regular pace feels like I am making progress. Isn't this the case with so many things in life? I'm grateful that God meets me each time I open my laptop to write. He is ever faithful and will help me to the finish line.
I leave you with a photo of Monument Valley in northeast Arizona. It illustrates how deceptive distances can be in the desert.
