The island of Funen, Denmark lies beteen the island of Zealand, where Copenhagen is located, and the Jutland peninsula. It is accessed from Zealand by the eleven-mile long Storebaelt (Great Belt) Bridge.

We stayed at this quiet, green camping park called Gronnehave Strand, which means Green Garden Beach in Danish. Tent camping as well as campervans, motorhomes and caravans are welcome.

A cheerful, full-size kitchen is located in the amenities house, which is adjacent to the outdoor washing-up areas.

A soft, gray, sandy beach lines the camping park with views of the Storebaelt Bridge. The managers were especially helpful with suggestion on where to park our motorhome for sightseeing in Odense.

South of the camping park lies the small town of Nyborg where we wandered a bit.

Most Danish towns have a central pedestrian shopping street.

The black silhouettes seemed to be a temporary WWI memorial.

Nyborg's harbor with a Danish flag, called Dannebrog, proudly flying in the upper right hand corner.

Near the camping park, we found a u-pick flower field. Brian pulled in at my request. Cutting fresh flowers reminded me of my own garden from years past.

I selected gladiolas and dahlias and placed coins in the box. Such cheerful additions to our campsite!

The main motivation for visiting Odense on the island of Funen was to see Hans Christian Andersen sites. Above is his childhood home.

Traditional Danish row houses in H. C. Andersen's neighborhood.

St. Knud's Cathedral in Odense where H. C. Andersen was confirmed in 1819.

At the H. C. Andersen Museum. For his wonderful fairy tales, such as The Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Pea, Andersen is a cultural icon and much loved by the Danish people.

At the museum, this painting depicts a scene from his story The Ugly Duckling. The statue below gives an idea of this author's love for children-the people he wrote stories for. We had a delightful time exploring Odense on a lovely August day.
