After an hour's drive from Salisbury, we arrived in the village of Chawton. Our goal--to visit Jane Austen's House Museum where she lived the last eight years of her life.

Jane lived with her mother, sister Cassandra, and friend Martha Lloyd. Thanks to their brother Edward, they lived rent free in this modest village home.

Although Jane had done some writing earlier, her writing career was really launched here at Chawton. Part of the reason is that she had so much support from her roommates.

Jane was required to do only a small amount of domestic work so that she could write. That her mother, sister, and friend took care of the household allowed Jane the freedom to pursue her passion.

A bronze of Jane at her writing table, which was located near the dining parlor window. If visitors came to call, she could hear the creaky door and stash her work out of sight.

Jane lived a happy life here from July 1809 until her death in May 1817 at the age of 41. Four of her novels were published in this time frame; two additional novels were published posthumously.

There are not many portraits of Jane Austen, but her likeness does grace Britain's ten pound note. She is buried in the North Aisle of the Winchester Cathedral.

After our delightful visit to Jane Austen's House Museum, Brian and I walked across the road to Cassandra's Cup where we enjoyed lunch and hot coffee on this wet, chilly day.

Enjoying our well-earned cups of coffee after exploring Jane Austen's home, the outbuildings, and garden. A lovely way to top off an excellent morning!
