Canterbury is another wonderful English cathedral town, and our final one to visit before heading back to continental Europe.

We enjoyed the guided tour where we learned that the Canterbury Cathedral was established in 597 A.D. as England's first cathedral.

The tour also provided information about the famous murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket which occurred on the altar's steps in 1170.

After that historic event, Canterbury Cathedral became one of Europe's most important pilgrimage centers.

The Nave of Canterbury Cathedral.

Lovely lighting on the ornate ceiling.

View of the altar with the Trinity Chapel behind it.

We visited Canterbury a few days before Christmas.

So, the Christmas Market was in full swing.

On our way back to our campsite, we appreciated this relatively quiet and not too crowded street. And then the glorious sun came out! A lovely way to end our day of exploring Canterbury.
